This is a quandary many of us face when we finish our compulsory schooling – should we spend another 3 years in education, accruing debt? Or should we get in the jobs market pronto and accrue experience and money instead?
Society seems to lean towards going to a good university and getting a degree. While this looks great on paper and may suit some people, recent statistics show that the other option may be better…
Degree stats:
- 58.8% of university graduates aren’t actually in graduate roles. In comparison, countries like Germany, who have a tradition of good vocational training have 10% or less in non-graduate roles (Figures from the European Social Survey).
- 45% of university leavers will NEVER pay off their student loans. “This situation is unsustainable given that the government estimates that 45% of university graduates will not earn enough to repay their student loans.” (Peter Cheese, Chief Executive of the CIPD).
- 10% of graduates have poor literacy skills and 14% have poor numeracy skills. Figures released by the OECD show that UK graduates ranked poorly against comparable advanced nations.
Apprenticeship stats:
- 89% of apprentices are satisfied with their apprenticeship; 97% of apprentices said their ability to do the job had improved, and 92% of apprentices said their career prospects had improved.
- Over 90% of apprentices currently go into work or further training.
- There are, on average, 23,000 apprenticeship opportunities listed every month.
